  • Spread: Grows about 2–3 feet wide
  • Spacing: Plant 2–3 feet apart for best coverage
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate

Description

Barberry Crimson Pygmy features a compact, rounded form and rich burgundy foliage that retains its vibrant color throughout the growing season. In late spring, small yellowish flowers may appear, sometimes followed by bright red berries that can persist into cooler weather and attract birds. This low-profile shrub works well for borders, foundation plantings, or mass plantings, where its tidy shape and consistent color stand out. Known for its deer resistance, it also adapts to containers when provided with proper drainage and regular watering.

General Care

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; amend heavier soils with organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Once established, it tolerates short dry spells but benefits from additional watering in prolonged drought.
  • Mulching: A 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base helps maintain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the main stems.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring, if needed, to maintain shape and encourage healthy new growth.

Barberry Crimson Pygmy provides reliable color and structure, making it a versatile choice for a range of landscape settings in cooler climates.
