Description

Orange Rocket is an upright, columnar barberry that produces striking coral-orange new growth in spring. As summer progresses, its foliage matures to a blend of vibrant red and subtle green tones, culminating in deeper red hues by fall. Occasionally, small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by bright red berries that may attract birds. Its compact footprint suits narrow garden beds, borders, or container plantings, and its foliage adds a bold accent to mixed landscapes. Deer tend to avoid its thorny branches, making it a suitable choice for areas prone to browsing.

General Care

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade, with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil; amending heavier soils with organic matter improves drainage.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it can handle short dry spells but benefits from supplemental watering during extended droughts.
  • Mulching: A 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the stems.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain the desired shape and encourage healthy new growth.

Orange Rocket brings consistent color and vertical interest to cooler climate gardens, all within a manageable height and spread. Its adaptability makes it a bold focal point or accent in a variety of planting designs.
