Description
Layeroka Chestnut offers a fresh and satisfying presence in the landscape, showcasing bright green leaves that transition to a gorgeous golden hue in autumn. In late spring, upright catkins appear, eventually leading to a harvest of sweet, edible chestnuts in fall. These nuts are wonderful roasted or added to baked goods for a delicious treat. While partially self-fertile, Layeroka Chestnut produces the finest yields when cross-pollinated with another chestnut variety blooming at the same time.
General Care
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light each day for vigorous growth and abundant nut production.
- Watering: Water regularly after planting to establish strong roots; once established, water as needed during prolonged dry periods
- Mulching: A 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base helps conserve soil moisture and maintain stable temperatures. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged branches and maintain a tidy shape. This encourages healthy growth and a polished canopy.
Layeroka Chestnut delivers a stunning combination of culinary interest, refreshing foliage, and a grand presence—offering some of the finest fall flavor and color for Michigan landscapes.
